Hello, I’m Vince BouchardA passionate Product Designer specializing in UX,
Visual Design and Prototyping.
UX design is all about problem-solving and anyone hiring a UX designer is hiring someone for their ability to systematically figure out the best way to solve their users’ problems. - So, this is what I do!

I shape user experience into simple design that carry us over hurdles large and small so that we can make life easier. -and focus more on what’s important.

Here, you will also find:
  • A Graphic Designer skilled in wireframe and user flows.
  • A Certified Usability Analyst in user-centered-design and user testing.
  • A human factors specialist in interactions and ergonomics.
  • I'm almost unique.

I know what you're thinking, now that's a bit of an odd statement to kick this all off with - but it really is true.

For over 20+ years now I have been working within the online industry and during that time I have designed, developed and managed more than 65+ websites, mobile and software projects. Since, I became a senior product designer in user experience and user interface. I have also worked across multiple team positions, such as Director of Web Development to SEO Analyst, from Web Designer to Usability Analyst. During which, I’ve come to realize that versatility and hands-on experience is the most important ingredient of being a great UX specialist. As well as understanding the user & client, but also understanding the way technology works best for them. By having empathy, humility and the ability to communicate clearly and visually, I was able to deliver many awards winning products.

Most recently, I have developed a strong expertise in Web responsive mobile application, where I had a chance to do both design and coding CSS for native and web application. These involvements have led me to perfect my understanding in the development of great and effective visual design interface.

I have also a huge interest in instructional design and interaction for elearning. I am working on specialising my self in augmented reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR).

With all this wide-ranging experience is why I feel - I’m almost unique.

My experience has allowed me to really understand every aspect of UX.

I have covered a lot over the last two decades and attempting to demonstrate or detail this in a short and concise way is quite a challenge. To make it easier for you to discover what I have to offer, I have split my career and skills into a number of specific sections.

Breaking down the site in this manner allows you to quickly view my skills and abilities or take a look at the types of positions I have held. I have also highlighted some of my achievemens and awards and provided a portfolio of design works for you to browse and assess.

    Interaction and Web Design

I have been designing for the web for over 20 years now and have a very deep knowledge and understanding about everything to do with web design. I like to not only focus on how a product looks but also how it works. I consider all touchpoints a user has with the UI, from acquisition to conversion and moving people through the experience making them feel good about the interaction. I understand UI standards and conventions and am capable of envisioning the dynamic nature of the product and the functional flow. I understand interdependencies, requirements, and constraints, and always take a step back, to see the big picture, and clarify how everything fits together.

I have worked on or alongside every stage of a products life cycle from initial development and wireframing through to marketing and deployment. My experience includes:

    • A top-notch user experience designer who is passionate, creative, collaborative and strives to create simple, intuitive and delightful experiences.
    • Visualizing and create concepts from the idea phase all the way to the final product.
    • Proficient with using full visual experience to captivate and engage users on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
    • Design complex UI according to responsive mobile framework rules.
    • Been up to date on the latest design and digital trends and patterns.
    • Deep understanding of visual design principles and concepts, including icon design, typography, color theory, accessibility, aesthetics, proportionality, layout fundamentals, and information design.
    • Actively contribute in project meetings to discuss the business needs.
    • Expert use of design tools, such as Adobe Creative Suite and Axure.
    • Excellent conceptualization ability, visual communication, sketching and drawing abilities.
    • Understanding of common software development practices and how to play a key part in their success.
    • Proficient in HTML and CSS, front-end development.

I always move with the web as it changes (such as HTML5, CSS3, API's and the ever-evolving range of development libraries), making sure I am proficient in new methodologies such as fluid mobile design, recognised strategies and supporting technology.

Even though my skills reach far beyond web design and front end development, I am always keeping up-to-date with the latest methods and requirements of a modern web designer.

    Desktop, Tablet & Mobile Design

Mobile technologies are more and more embedded into the fabric of people's' everyday lives, I have specialized myself in designing user experiences for an increasing range of mobile devices. My approach to mobile design has always been analytical, task and goal oriented. This methodology has lead me to apply UX and UI best practices, which help to create engaging experiences on adaptive designs. While constantly understanding the context and environment in which these devices are used where a touchscreen is different in interactions compared to a laptop.

    My experience includes:

    • Understanding the current mobile interactions, patterns and design UX theory.
    • Transform complex use cases into simple, elegant and modern mobile experiences.
    • Design web applications and translate complex interactions into simple, elegant mobile user flows.
    • Create wireframes and prototypes to communicate mobile design concepts.
    • Test scenarios with multiple devices and environment.
    • Champion best practices, evangelizing design principles internally and to stakeholders.
    • Create user interviews and usability research.

I worked with multiple approach. Deciding of which technology should be used (native vs responsive vs hybrid) was also part of my studies. Since often this will impact the user interaction but also the business cost, maintenance & scalability. I was able to propose cost effective solutions.

    Responsive UI Design

As responsive design is becoming the de facto means of supporting multiple devices, I've become well versed in creating more modular designs. I have a lot of experience of what is possible with CSS media queries. As designs become more fluid and responsive, there is a greater need to understand the techniques and mechanisms that are used to deliver and transform content.

Todays websites now have to also consider the mobile-first index announced by Google. As more small businesses increase their mobile presence, their website, eCommerce, social media pages and other assets have to be easily accessible across all devices.

I've designed for both desktop and mobile across a wide range of subject matters and target audiences, such as:

    • Financial advisor web app.
    • Online Brokerage app.
    • Site administration needs.
    • Health care provider app.
    • Patient Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
    • Student silent reading software.
    • and much more.

    User Centered Design

My UX design success comes from really understanding the users. From understanding their needs and from altering designs based on their feedback. I am keenly interested in how people relate to technology so I can translate this understanding in user-centered design. UCD calls for involving users throughout the design process via a variety of research and design techniques so as to create highly usable and accessible products for them. By using this methodologies to further put research insights and business requirements into design strategy and concepts. I am user problem-driven and seek to understand first and look for solutions second.

    Graphic Designer & Rapid Prototyping

Creative artist with a good mastery of drawing, computer graphics and visual art. I can intervene at different stages of the project by preparing preliminary mockups to visually illustrate ideas. Rapid prototyping might also be a simple paper or more elaborate interactive Axure prototype.

I am always preaching for a quick prototype to help test ideas and concepts with the users. This allow us to quickly come to a conclusions on assumption that we make as stakeholders since we know so much about our stuff. This process can save a lot of time and money at the end of a project. Unfortunately, it is still undervalued and sometime put a side.

    Instructional Designer

Education in a company is a constantly evolving process. As new innovations and professional training needs to be created, I was involved at multiple stage with eLearning Team to create educational materials and online course. I was tasked with designing courses, developing entire courses or curriculums and creating online interactive training materials with specific LMS.

I like to think that my experience in UX is closely related with instructional design. At the end of the day, been able to translate concept in a simple and easy way to help people to learn something is pure UX! Primarily, the success to an effective and appealing eLearning course boils down to the fluidity and structure of the content – this is where I come into play.

Expertise in new web and mobile technology, 65+ Websites as a developer and designer. Promotional site, e-commerce, CMS, transactional, admin dashboard, brokerage, mobile and web application. HTML and CSS have no secrets for me.

My design philosophy is to approach each iteration as part of a living system. Every design solution should have the potential to scale beyond its immediate feature. This applies to design processes and culture as well. Some of the task I was involved with:

    • Design, create and develop website; Visualize and create concepts from the idea phase all the way to the final product.
    • Code HTML page using strong CSS3 and JQuery.
    • Design complex UI according to responsive mobile design rules.
    • Design prototypes with HTML or a prototyping and specification software (Axure).
    • Create requirements document for new features.
    • Actively contribute in project meetings to discuss the business needs.
    • Create HTML for email campaigns Apply SEO best practices.

    SEO

Due to front end developers having to have the need to understand SEO/SEM, this was a natural step for me. However, my ability to manage, maintain and analyse data lead me to a large in-house SEO team in the Automotive industries for a short time.

Google and such tools gave me valuable insight into our keyword management. However, it wasn't until I worked alongside programmers to develop custom tracking tools that we really began to kick our competition to the curb. By linking usage data, detailed business stats and financial information, we were able to squeeze the very most out of every money we spent, every click we received and every keyword we targeted to dominate top positions across all search engines.

    Usability Testing

My journey into UX has brought me to get training and specialized in usability testing. While working in the Health care industry, I was part of a large group of UX designer were we had access to a usability lab, where paid user will be coming to test our concepts.

My main task was to identify usability problems with a design as early as possible, so it can be fixed before the design is implemented. As such, usability testing was often conducted on prototypes rather than finished products, with different levels of fidelity.

In a typical usability test, I would be directing the test participants (remote or in person) in a series of recorded tasks that were identified previously in a test case scenario for the design. Analyzing the results and making iteration on the spot was also part of the routine.

I learned a lot about user interaction during these test with real struggling users. I think we assume too quickly what the user need and how they think. This is usually when we are wrong.

    Student Experience
    ABOUT THE PROJECT
At a time when 70% of non-proficient readers have difficulty to read, I was involved in creating a new generation of silent reading Web app to give students a true learning experience. The school prides themselves on offering a truly unique on-campus educational program that helps students in their reading fluency. With a long history of success and a much proven software, I was up to the challenge.
    MY ROLE
I was the lead UX designer on this project. Having a background in finance, banking & health care industries, this project was exciting for me, especially since the education system was new to me. But making an interactive Website was no secret to me. Taking cues from all the stakeholders and conducting user interviews, I wanted to design a platform that was highly interactive, feedback-oriented, and individualized.
    UX Studies
    DISCOVERY PROCESS
Our initial discovery process informed the design of the experience and influenced the initial roadmap and digital strategy. I completed an analysis of the top competitors in the silent reading space, as well as some recent innovators who were disrupting the online education domain.
    EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND VISION
We brainstormed features for the platform that helped to achieve our goals, and rated them based on their business value, design effort, and technical complexity. This exercise allowed us to have a holistic view of all the included features and understand the effort, scope and value of each individual feature to inform the project plan moving forward.
    DESIGN EXECUTION AND VALIDATION
From there I began to define the UI framework and created wireframes for the rest of the experience. This process included many trips to the school's campus to workshop with the clients. As part of my research I sat in on real-time classes and got feedback from the students. Soon, we were making an Axure prototype to validate our concept with real users. Adjustment were made in between session to quickly test new ideas.
    THE RESULTS
The Web App launched with great results. The completion rate, typically in 70-75%, was just over 85%. Engagement and motivation with course materials and with peers was extremely high - all of the students who completed the program said that they felt that it was much more easy to use and they feel that they were better reader. The program's ability to stand on its own without intervention from teacher was crucial to its success. Many School District were very enthusiastic to see how much student interest in reading change their life.

    BUSINESS CHALLENGES
Visitors were not converting into new customers. The process of enrolling and renewing a drug prescription online was too long and not intuitive. The adoption rate was very low. Website was base on old html technology.
    MY ROLE
I led the design of the New generation of the Online Prescription Renewal Platform on iOS, Android, Desktop and Web since the outset of the project in July 2012. Up until December 2016, I led efforts to evolve the service and address customer pain‐points related to the browse and discovery experience.

    EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND VISION

I designed down in Axure a prototype for mobile and Web responsive. I executed multiple iterations of wireframes, prototypes and design specs before validating with the client. I was the prime designer for coding the responsive design html & CSS.

Usability testing was required at a certain point to validate certain concepts. With my background in Web analytics and SEO, we have implemented a strategy to measure usability with metrics and A-B testing.

    BUSINESS CHALLENGES
With a network of more than 1000+ financial advisors, managing 500K clients and 2B in assets, going paperless was a challenge that we needed to solve. A smart way to save a tons of paper but also increase the time of process to open accounts or change client financial profile. Financial Advisor would be provided with Ipads with the PEAK financial app installed and they would use it when meeting with customers. All the data would be saved real time in our data center.
    MY ROLE
I was hired as the Development Director of a small team of IOS Developers. But I was also managing a team of offshore consultants. At that time, we were working with the 2nd generation of Ipad. Technology was still limited. After defining the business and technological requirements and limitation, I decided that the best cost effective was going to go with an hybrid approach. A native IOS container with native functionalities including Web views that will run PHP web page forms. At the end, the deployment process was much easier and easy to maintain.
    CUSTOMER INSIGHTS AND IDEATION
I partnered with three financial advisor and product owner to uncover the reality on the field and the limitation of the device. We quickly figure out that filling a complex financial form on a tablet could be long, painful and frustrating. Multi user test and interviews were very beneficial before the design phase so I could come up with a simplified process. We did had to adjust the UI to accommodate the size of the device.
    DESIGN EXECUTION AND VALIDATION

I started to sketch a complex diagram of flows and tasks for each steps of the workflow. After creating high fidelity mockups and defining UI interactions, we started right away coding. This helped quickly to test ideas, gain alignment and drive decision-making. Our initial discovery informed the design of the experience and influenced the initial roadmap.

As soon that we had a working prototype, I was going on the road to test with users and was sometime doing real time changes with the team remotely. Most of the frustration was coming from assumptions that we thought that we could have full control of the device. Unfortunately, Apple was not going to make it easy for us to achieve simple task. The project was run on a thigh deadline. The launch of the mobile app was going to coincide with the annual financial advisor conference. We were able to release the BETA version the night before in my hotel room.

    THE REVIEW

After reviewing the success and failure of an audacious vision. We were very happy with the decisions we've made. The word spread quickly across the industry and other competitor came out with their own version of the financial app. I think it was still to early for a mass adoption since most of our users was still trying to get familiar with the idea that mobile device was going to replace paper and make their life easier. I got so many thanks in person from those who decided to embrace the transition. Finally, they would not have to carry that big case of paper anymore!!

Bring Out the Best in Me

Why would you want to hire me?
This is a tough question to answer in a very competitive market. The industry is now calling Web designer: UX Designer. Which I think is misunderstanding the meaning of “User Experience”. I don’t think you can design an experience. Having the skills to understand human behavior and user interactions as nothing to do with nice colors and UI. Applying these skills require many years of user feedback from real life success and failures.
There are many good skilled UX Designer out there that can make nice UI. Beautiful designs are pleasing because they are clear and evoke the appropriate emotions. Been a Certified Usability Analyst (CUA), I have discovered a natural interest in solving user problems. By mixing my knowledge of graphic design, marketing, business analyst, web development, management, ux researcher, usability testing, UCD and a passion for fixing stuff, I have become a more complete UX specialist.

    Where Do I Shine?

I have a passion for solving complex problems. My approach in design is human-centered and I feel comfortable advocating for user needs vs prettiness. I pride myself on my ability to work fast, generate a wide variety of high quality solutions, and develop multiple concepts quickly that are based on user test feedback. I’m known for being a team player who is flexible and open to different ways of designing, discussing, and presenting work. As a Designer, I can contribute from end-to-end on projects, which means I’m comfortable as a researcher, user testing, strategist, and designer.

I have an exuberant passion for the power of strategic design and an “anything is possible” mindset. I take pride in my work and client satisfaction with a humble approach.

A call myself a “UX Futurist”. I consider all aspect of usability and how it will be applied in the future. How current trend will impact the way we think, behave and adapt to change.

I have covered a lot in the last 20 years, which make me a more complete UX specialist. Real life problems with real life solutions. My ability to perform all research related tasks in the research project lifecycle makes me a strong candidate for positions of understanding. I have a talent in eliciting potent data and extracting meaningful insight. I strive to discover user needs and expectations through interviews, surveys, and test plans that lead to intelligent design decisions.

    What Can I Do?

From creating test plans, writing screener surveys, recruiting users, scheduling users, moderating tests, creating video clip highlights, presenting top line results, creating research findings summaries, as well as effectively presenting and sharing results are competencies and strengths of my approach to UX. Further experience spans end to end design, from concept, white boarding, wireframing, testing, iterating, prototyping, visual design to a final polished product

    What I'm Looking For?

Now I could be bragging on my career success for a long time but the question is: “What problem are you trying to solve that I can help you with?” I am receiving many calls and emails from recruiters every week asking me about filling junior UX position without even looking where I’m coming from and where I’m going. This is not what I am looking for. I’m not so interested in coding or programming anymore. You would be wasting your money and using only 25% of my skills. If you did read up to here, I think you understand where I can help you.

    More about me

Hello, and thanks for wanting to know more about me. Most recently, I have developed a strong expertise in Web responsive mobile application, where I had a chance to do both design and code CSS for native and web application. These involvements have led me to perfect my understanding in the development of great and effective visual design interface, depending on user context and devices. Beautiful designs are pleasing because they are clear and evoke the appropriate experi- ence. I also understand that user feedback and revision also leads to a stronger product. I am always moti- vated to resolve a usability issue.
